Common Questions
Program Basics
How much do Polymechanic 2 apprentices get paid?
INCAP Polymechanic 2 apprentices typically earn between $14 and $17 per hour during the first two years of the program. Pay during the final year varies depending on the specialization track selected and the employer. Because Polymechanic 2 apprentices are employees of their company, they fall under the employer's policies for benefits, performance reviews, and pay increases over time.
When does the apprenticeship start and how long does it last?
Students begin exploring manufacturing careers as early as 8th and 9th grade through career exploration activities and planning with their school counselor. Students apply and interview when they’re in 10th grade.
The INCAP Polymechanic 2 apprenticeship officially begins in 11th grade and lasts three years, including summers.
What does a typical weekly schedule look like?
An INCAP Polymechanic 2 apprentice follows a weekly schedule that changes over time as apprentices gain experience:
- 11th grade: Two days per week at their employer, with the other three days at school
- Summer after 11th grade: Five days per week at their employer
- 12th grade: Three days per week at their employer, with the other two days at school
- Summer after 12th grade: Five days per week at their employer
- Final Year: Four days per week at their employer and one day completing coursework
When Polymechanic 2 apprentices are on-site, the goal is eight-hour days, with schedules set in coordination with their employer. Students and employers work together to identify schedules that meet both parties' needs, allowing students to potentially continue participating in extracurricular activities, including those that take place during the summer.
What is the work environment like?
INCAP Polymechanic 2 apprentices work in real advanced manufacturing settings alongside skilled technicians and manufacturing professionals. Apprentices work with machinery, automation systems, quality processes, and digital tools in environments that emphasize safety, precision, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
What You'l Learn & Earn
What skills will I learn?
As part of the INCAP Polymechanic 2 apprenticeship, you'll learn a mix of manufacturing, technical, and professional skills that prepare you for advanced manufacturing careers.
- Manufacturing skills: CNC machining, assembly, fabrication, and quality inspection

What classes will I take?
The student’s school schedule must allow them to leave the school building to work while still completing the classes they need to graduate high school. Also, students will be required to take several courses as part of their apprenticeship, including technical math and communication, among others. Some of the required classes will be available at their high school as dual-credit courses, and others will be offered at a regional Career and Technical Education Center.
What will I earn when I complete the apprenticeship?
Through this apprenticeship, students will meet the key requirements for Indiana’s new Employment Honors Plus diploma seal: completing at least 650 hours of work-based learning and earning an INCAP credential, which is recognized by the Indiana Department of Education as a Credential of Value. The diploma seal and the INCAP credential will be recognized by businesses as indicators of industry experience, and the INCAP credential may count toward college credit in a related degree program. Students will also earn multiple industry-recognized certifications throughout their apprenticeship.
