Common Questions
Here are answers to some of the questions students and parents or guardians ask most often. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, your local INCAP Connector or school counselor can help.
Getting Started
Will I get paid?
Yes. Students in the Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway are paid while participating in their apprenticeship. Depending on the occupation, that may be a monthly stipend during training or an hourly wage as a paid employee. Rather than spending your time in a typical part-time job, you'll earn money while building skills, experience, and connections that can benefit you long after high school.
Will this cost me anything?
No. There is no fee to participate in the Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway. In fact, students are paid throughout their apprenticeship, either as a monthly stipend or as a paid employee, depending on the occupation. However, there may be initial costs associated with certain occupations, such as acquiring workplace-appropriate attire. Your regional INCAP Connector and school can also help you understand any occupation-specific requirements or expenses.
Who can participate in the Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway?
The Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway is open to eligible Indiana high school students. Specific eligibility requirements may vary by apprenticeship, employer, or school district.
Students who are interested in applying for an INCAP apprenticeship should confirm with their school counselor that they are on track to graduate and that participating in an INCAP apprenticeship would not put them off track. INCAP Connectors will be able to share more specific information about the requirements for each occupation.
Can I apply to more than one apprenticeship?
Yes. Students may be able to apply for multiple apprenticeship opportunities, depending on availability and the application process in their region.
Do I need previous work experience?
No. Apprenticeships are designed to help you build skills and experience. Employers understand that students are beginning their careers and will provide training and support along the way.
During High School
Can I still participate in sports, clubs, or other extracurricular activities?
In some cases, yes. Your school counselor, employer, and regional INCAP Connector will work with you to coordinate your apprenticeship around your classes and, whenever possible, sports, clubs, extracurricular activities, and other commitments.
Will participating affect my high school diploma?
The Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway is designed to complement your high school education. You'll continue working toward your Indiana high school diploma while participating in your apprenticeship, and your school counselor will help ensure you stay on track. When you graduate, you'll have met the key requirements for the Employment Honors Plus diploma seal.
What if I decide an apprenticeship isn't right for me?
It's okay if your plans change. Your school counselor and regional INCAP Connector are there to support you throughout the process and can help you explore other options if an apprenticeship is no longer the right fit.
After Graduation
Do I have to work for my employer after I finish my INCAP apprenticeship?
No. Some students may choose to continue working with their apprenticeship employer if a position is available, while others attend college, work for another employer, or continue with an INCAP Career Program.
Can I still go to college?
Absolutely. The Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway is designed to expand your options, not limit them. Students who choose to go on to college after their apprenticeship will build on the knowledge, skills, and experience gained through their apprenticeship. Depending on the occupation, you may also earn college credit that can be applied toward additional education or stacked as you continue your college journey.
