Common Questions
Program Basics
How much do Hospitality Operations Specialist apprentices get paid?
Pay varies by employer type, location, and an apprentice’s specific responsibilities. Because Hospitality Operations Specialist apprentices are employees of the business, they fall under their employer's policies for benefits, performance reviews, and pay increases over time.
When does the apprenticeship start and how long does it last?
Students begin exploring hospitality careers as early as 8th and 9th grade through career exploration activities and planning with their school counselor. Students apply and interview when they’re in 10th grade.
The INCAP Hospitality Operations Specialist apprenticeship officially begins in 11th grade and lasts two years with an optional summer term.
What does a typical weekly schedule look like?
An INCAP Hospitality Operations Specialist apprentice follows a weekly schedule that changes over time as apprentices gain experience:
11th grade: Three six-hour shifts per week at their employer, with the rest of the week at school
Summer after 11th grade: Students have the option to continue working with their employer, but it is not required
12th grade: Three six-hour shifts per week at their employer, with the rest of the week at school
Note: Schedules can vary based on whether a student works with their employer during the school day — as indicated in the schedule above — or completes some or all of their on-the-job training in the evening or on a weekend. Students and employers work together to identify schedules that meet both parties' needs, allowing students to potentially continue participating in extracurricular activities, including those that take place during the summer.
What is the work environment like?
INCAP Hospitality Operations Specialist apprentices work in real business settings such as including hotels, restaurants, attractions, event venues, tourism businesses, travel centers, and hospitality retail operations.
What You'l Learn & Earn
What skills will I learn?
As part of the INCAP Hospitality Operations Specialist apprenticeship, you'll develop a mix of hospitality, communication, business, and professional skills, including guest service, marketing, business operations, teamwork, problem-solving, and hospitality technology.
What classes will I take?
Students will not be required to take any hospitality-specific courses at their high school because all relevant coursework will be taught during their time with their employer and/or through the online learning management system. However, students are encouraged to take related classes if available at their school (examples include Introduction to Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Principles of Business Management, Digital Applications and Responsibility, or equivalent computer applications). The only requirement for students is that their school schedule allows them to leave the school building to work while still completing the classes they need to graduate.
What will I earn when I complete the apprenticeship?
Through this apprenticeship, students will meet the key requirements for Indiana’s new Employment Honors Plus diploma seal: completing at least 650 hours of work-based learning and earning an INCAP credential, which is recognized by the Indiana Department of Education as a Credential of Value. The diploma seal and the INCAP credential are recognized by businesses across Indiana as indicators of industry experience, and the INCAP credential may count toward college credit in a related degree program.
Hospitality Operations Specialists will also earn the following industry credentials: ServSafe Food Protection Manager, ServSafe Allergens, ServSafe Alcohol (if required by the role), and AHLEI Guest Service Gold with the Certified Guest Service Professional designation. Apprentices also can elect to earn additional industry credentials: AHLEI Hospitality and Tourism Specialist (HTS), ServSuccess Certified Restaurant Professional, and ManageFirst Restaurant Management Professional (RMP).
